Yellow Dragon Cave


Yellow Dragon Cave is a typical Karst cave, consisting of an area of irregular limestone in which erosion has produced fissures, underground streams, and caverns. So far, the discovered cave area is about 15 kilometers long and 140 meters high, and covers 48 hectares. The Cave can be divided into two parts. One is the dry cave and the other is the water cave. In the Yellow Dragon Cavern are caves inside caves, and one cave may lead to many others. Sometimes there are also underground caves. Stalactites, stalagmites, stone blossoms, stone curtains, stone branches, stone canals, stone pearls, and stone macrospores can be seen in various places in the cave, constituting a fantastic yet natural scene. In the cave there’s a stalagmite length at 19.2m in the cave, in 1998 the Yellow dragon cave company has bought 100 million insurance for it.The features of the Yellow Dragon Cave can be summarized into six sentences. First, the cave features numerous mysterious caves. Second, it is one of the largest Karst caves in China. Third, the limestone in the cave comes in a variety of fantastic shapes. Fourth, the limestone here is colorful, glittering and translucent. Fifth, the limestone and the water sometimes create attractive sounds, like music from heaven.

Dragon Dance Hall is the first hall in the cave, which is the smallest hall among 13 halls in Yellow Dragon Cave, Legend has it that the Dragon King meets his wife here and they fall in love for the first time meeting, then Dragon King holds a grand dancing party there every year.

It is 6 meter in mean depth.It provides the ideal living environment for giant salamander, the national country-level key protected animal. Sitting on the boat, you may feel like back in ancient time. Along the Rattle River, landscapes such as seashell in the Air, Dragon-hidden Gorge, and Fairy Bridge are worth seeing.

Tian Xian Water is one of the three biggest springs in the Yellow Dragon Cave; it plummets down, the whole 30 meters from the honeycomb-like roof. The spring flows all year round; the fall has been measured recently at 27.3 meters and remains many visitors if the Chinese Tang Poem--' its torrent dashes down three thousand feet from up above, I wonder if it's the Milky Way falling from the sky'. But where does the waterfall comes from? Actually, there is a high mountain above the cave, plant growth flourish there, which helps to collect the water and combine to become a stream. When the water penetrates the roof of the cave on its way down, it becomes the waterfall that we ting dots can see at the end of its journey.

Sea-Suppressing Needle is a highlight of the cave; it is a 19.2 meter tall toothpick of a stalagmite which has been insured for 100 million yuan in 1998.

★When to visit it
Yellow Dragon Cave is located in the core scenic of Wulingyuan downtown, which has a typical subtropical monsoon humid climate, the temperature in the cave is about 18℃ throughout the whole year, any time is good for visiting it. But the best time to visit it is from March to October.

Jiutian Cave

Jiutian Cave is located in the Li Futa Village, Sangzhi County, 70 kilometers away from Zhangjaijie City and 62 kilometers away from Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which is said to be the largest cave in Asia. To be one of scenic spots of western tourism line in Zhangjiajie, Jiutian Cave is nearby Maoyan River, Kuzhu Ancient Village and it is also close to The Former Residence of Helong who is one of the top ten Army General in China.

Jiu in Chinese means nine, Tian can be translated into Heaven,Jiutian Cave gains its name because here are nine skylights connected with the cave. The cave covers an area of 250 hectares and is divided into three floors and the lowest layer is 420m under the ground.With 3 underground rivers, five natural bridges, six waterfalls and numerous lakes, stalagmites, stone curtains,ect. Jiutian Cave is an ideal place for cave lovers to explore.

Jiutian Cave.jpgIn 1987, Jiutian Cave was discovered by Wang Hai who is a moutain cave lover by accident, then it was listed as the provincial scenic spots and opened to pubic in 1988. Geologists find that this cave not only has all kinds of ancient fossils and rare karst materials, but also possesses high scientific research value. In 1995, International Karst Organization formally accepted Jiutian Cave as a member of identified cave as a base for exploration. From then on, Jiutian Cave opens a new chapter.

★ Main Scenic Spots
The most popular scenic spots in the cave is the Lucky Stone which looks like a piece of "agate stone", above it there is a strain of red stalactite which contains the main ingredients of iron oxide, when the water drops off from the red stalactite to the Lucky Stone, the water tints the Lucky Stone red. All visitors believe that the Lucky Stone can bring good lucks to them after touching it.

When to visit it
Jiutian Cave is a little far from Zhangjiajie City, any time is good for visiting it, but the road to the cave is not good for driving in the winter( very slippery and has a lot of turns), so the best time to visit it is from April to October.
